10 THINGS WE LEARNED FROM THE NEXT TO NORMAL PRESS CALL
Last Thursday we were invited to the press call for the latest production of Next to Normal. Its return was highly anticipated, since the initial run at the Donmar Warehouse was completely sold out, even before it opened. The show is now running at Wyndham's Theatre in London's West End.
Find out more about this brilliant, mind blowing exploration of family, mental health and grief.
BEST NEW WEST END MUSICALS IN 2024
We’re not even halfway into 2024, but the calibre of musicals announced already is mind-blowing. While there’s incredible productions touring around the UK, I wanted to highlight some of the talent currently in the West End, and shows I’m excited for in the second half of 2024. Let’s take a look at some of the best new shows in London.
THE STATE BALLET OF GEORGIA TO PERFORM SWAN LAKE IN FIRST VISIT TO LONDON | GUEST POST BY GRAHAM WATTS
Despite being one of the world’s most accomplished and thrilling dance companies, The State Ballet of Georgia has never appeared in London during its distinguished 175-year history. That absence is soon to end as this revered company is to perform Swan Lake –the world’s most treasured ballet - at the London Coliseum from 28th August to 8th September 2024; and then at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre in Dublin from 20th to 24th November.
For a small nation, with a population under 4 million, Georgia has exported many ballet legends: three of the most important figures in world ballet during the twentieth century were George Balanchine (born Balanchivadze) (1904–1983), regarded as the “father” of American ballet and still - 40 years’ after his death - one of the most influential choreographers; Vakhtang Chabukiani (1910-1992), a great virtuoso dancer following in the footsteps of Nijinsky; and Tamara Toumanova (birth name, Tumanishvili) (1919–1996), one of the century’s most sought-after dancers who became a Hollywood film star. In more recent times, many outstanding Georgian dancers have performed in the UK, such as former Royal Ballet principal, David Makhateli (his sister, Maia – a principal at Dutch National Ballet - is one of today’s leading ballerinas) and Elena Glurjidze, a leading principal at English National Ballet.
The greatest Georgian dancer of modern times is Nina Ananiashvili. Born in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi, Nina became the leading ballerina at the world-famous Bolshoi Ballet of Moscow in the early 1980s and following the Gorbachev reforms of Perestroika and Glasnost, she was a principal dancer at American Ballet Theatre and an international guest star in countries all over the world, including at The Royal Ballet in London.
TOP 5 SHOWS APPEARING IN LONDON THEATRE WEEK
To celebrate this, I thought I’d share my top five productions currently included in this offer. With the amount of show-stopping productions currently in London’s West End - this was no small feat!
BEING A DISABLED THEATRE REVIEWER
5 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD SEE MOULIN ROUGE
In the past few years, Moulin Rouge has taken the musical theatre world by storm, in both Broadway and the West End. It seems as though it's here to stay, with booking already having been extended to mid 2024. The standout number of the show is "Come What May". However, did you know that this song wasn't originally going to be in the movie adaptation? It was instead supposed to used in another of Baz Luhrmann's classics, Romeo & Juliet. But what is it about Moulin Rouge that is so irresistible to audiences? Here are my top 5 reasons to go and visit the most extravagant event currently in London's West End.

2:22 A GHOST STORY ANNOUNCES CASTING FOR IT'S 3RD CONSECUTIVE WEST END SEASON
Jenny - Mandip Gill
Lauren - Beatriz Romilly
Ben - Sam Swainsbury
Tom Felton (Harry Potter) had this to say about joining the cast of 2:22, “I’m incredibly excited about getting to play in 2:22. I first started acting age 6 in a local theatre group and I haven’t trodden the boards since. I love the play, I’ve taken all my family to see it & everyone leaves with a smile. I’m thrilled to be part of this summers cast and will have a lot of fun with it.”
Mandip Gill (Doctor Who) had this to say about her West End debut, “I am thrilled to be making my West End debut as part of the new cast of an already successful show. I am equally scared of ghosts so this should be fun”.
Beatriz Romilly (Assassin's Creed) said, "I’m delighted to be returning to London and joining the new 2:22 company. I feel very lucky to be working with Matthew Dunster again, and getting a chance to dive into Danny Robins nail biting script with such a wonderful creative team and cast.”
Sam Swainsbury (Mum) said, "It's such a privilege to be joining the 2:22 company! I was really drawn to the script. It's engaging, funny, exciting and poignant, but… there was something else. Something I can’t put my finger on. Drawing me to it. Almost like… like a voice. From another place. That’s normal, right?!”
The show opens on 7th May, and will run for a strictly limited season, until 4th September. Tickets are on sale now, and you can buy tickets here.
HOW TO GET CHEAP THEATRE TICKETS
Without a doubt, the questions I'm asked most frequently are: how do you manage to go to the theatre so often and how do you manage to get the tickets so cheap? The truth is...a lot of researching! From day tickets, to lotteries, to saving up for vouchers - there's a lot you can do to make visiting the theatre more accessible financially.
In the past few months, I've been to the theatre many times, and most of the visits have cost less than £25 a ticket. I will say that living within an hour of London helps massively, as some of the options are very last minute, and require some kind of spontaneity.
So here's a round up of how I keep theatre visit costs as low as possible:
Download Today Tix
Without a doubt, Today Tix is the best app to download for all your theatre needs. It's worth mentioning that their standard pricing of seats doesn't differ much from booking direct. However, they're always running sales on a variety of shows - so make sure you have notifications turned on. My first visit to & Juliet this year was £15 for central seats in the Royal Circle and I have Mary Poppins booked next week in a similar place, for the same price!
Whilst we're talking about Today Tix, if you live near London or fancy seeing a show last minute - rush tickets are incredible! Every day at 10am, Today Tix offers a limited amount of £25 rush tickets for a huge selection of shows. From Dear Evan Hansen, Six, Come From Away, Dirty Dancing, & Juliet - you'll be spoilt for choice. Not only are the prices ridiculously cheap, but they're usually incredible seats!
Ticket Lotteries
Today Tix offer lotteries on a selection of the most popular West End shows, making them far more accessible. Hamilton has the front row reserved of every performance for their £10 lottery. You can enter the lottery every Friday, and the winners are announced the following Thursday. Cabaret, Cinderella, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and Wicked have a similar system in place (prices vary).
Sit Front Row
This may seem a strange one - but front row is always cheaper! The seats are usually marked as "restricted" because the stage is usually quite high. But I'm 5ft 3" and I've never struggled to see a show from front row. For example, front row at Bonnie and Clyde is £22.50, whereas a few rows back is £55.50...which is a huge difference.
Book Well in Advance
The cheapest tickets are naturally, always the quickest to go. So if you are looking to book front row seats, or seats that are more reasonably priced - book well in advance. You may be waiting slightly longer to see the show, but if keeping the cost down is important to you, it's a great idea.
See a Show in Preview Week
When a show first opens, it will have a week or so of preview performances. This is where the creative team and cast may make slight changes and look for ways to perfect the show before the "official" opening night. Preview weeks are offered at a discounted rate, and you'll also have the added bonus of being one of the first to see the show!
Day Tickets
Day tickets are usually released at the theatre of most shows at 10am every show performing day. Just rock up to the box office the morning of, and there will usually be great seats up for grabs. Phantom of the Opera is ahead of the curve and offer £30 day tickets online. You can access these tickets here from 10am each day.
At the start of each week (Monday at 12pm), Disney release a selection of £25 tickets for the week ahead. The shows offered are The Lion King and Frozen. While it's still pretty spontaneous, there's a bit more flexibility with this one if you have further to travel. You can find theses tickets here.
Book Tickets Before the Cast is Announced
Tickets always seem to cheaper before they make any cast announcements. So if you know there's a show you're particularly interested in, and you don't mind who the cast are - book in advance!
Check Returns Daily
I was desperate to book the final show before cast change at & Juliet and there weren't any seats in my usual spot. However, I checked back daily and was lucky enough to find reasonably priced tickets in the spot I love. Returns happen way more often than you may think - especially since the pandemic.
Seatplan offer a rewards scheme whereby if you take a view from your seat and upload it to their website, they reward you with points, which can then be exchanged for theatre vouchers. You get 50 points for most shows, 100 points for newer shows, and an extra 20 points if you upload a photo of your ticket. The best part is, you can upload any view from a seat within the last two years. I uploaded all of mine within the past few months, and got £20 of vouchers! You can find their rewards scheme here.
Stagedoor App
If you download the Stagedoor app and open a loyalty card with them (it's free), you'll get £10 off your first theatre booking with them. And the more shows you book, the more rewards you unlock for future visits.
And that's all my tips for finding theatre tickets as cheap as possible. Let me know if any of these tips and tricks work for you.

STAGEY CHAT WITH ALICIA BELGARDE
Get yourself comfy and join Alicia and I for a chat about all things stagey!
Hi Alicia, how are you? For anyone that doesn't know you - can you introduce yourself, and tell us a little bit about how, and why you got into acting?
Hi, I’m very well thank you! So, I’m Alicia Belgarde, I’m 23 and I’m a Musical Theatre Actress. I started off at a little dance school in The Midlands doing dance shows each year and then moved into doing Am-Dram which is where I found my passion for Musical Theatre. I started getting singing lessons and then went to an amazing sixth form which pushed me to audition for drama schools.
When you were growing up, did you always know that you wanted to be on the stage?
It wasn’t until I was about 15 that I realised that it was possible for a girl like me from The Midlands to actually make it. It was just a hobby until I did it full time at sixth form.
Over the past few years, covid has had a devastating impact on the industry, and unfortunately the Bring It On Tour ended after it's London run, instead of embarking on the planned UK tour. How is life now the Bring It On tour has ended?
Life immediately after Bring It On was incredibly hard. The cancellation of the tour was a shock to us all. Not only because we absolutely loved performing the show every night but to be honest with you, it was also because we thought that we had an extra six months of solid income and employment . It was a very scary time for us all as we were once again thrown into the world of unemployment. To go from performing in front of sold out audiences each night to going to job interviews for coffee shops/restaurants/office jobs is so hard. But it also makes you incredibly grateful for the time that we had in the show.
How did you prepare for the role of Eva in Bring It On? Not only does she seem the complete opposite of you personality wise, but she also is such a physically demanding role!
I was in the gym consistently for 6 months leading up to the show as I knew that my stamina would have to be through the roof!
In terms of the character, it seems absolutely insane but I would watch documentary after documentary about serial killers I actually got so invested in looking at the way that they talk and the way that they behave. Just the small things like how they move their face and eyes when they are talking about certain things. Guy, our director, and I discussed where we wanted to go with Eva and we decided that she would eventually become a serial killer. Well that’s how we wanted it to appear anyway. That’s how we found the comedy in it - because she is so psychotic!
The Bring It On cast (including yourself) was exceptional. Do you have any standout memories or moments from the show?
My absolute favourite moment was our first read/sing through the show. I remember looking around the room and thinking how lucky I was to be in a room so full of talent and kindness. We all instantly clicked. Coming out of covid, we were all just so grateful to be there and it made the process so special.
With your acting, dancing and singing skills, you are most definitely a triple threat. If you had to only choose to do one for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
My heart will always be with dancing. It’s what I started in and what I feel most confident doing!
What is your go-to musical theatre audition song?
I tend to try and match my song as close as possible to the role I’m in for so I’m often learning songs specifically for auditions (this is absolutely crazy behaviour and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone ). My song I sing most though, is I’m Not Alone from Carrie.
Regardless of gender and age, who would be your dream role to play and why?
It’s funny because Eva was my dream role for such a long time! I would love to give Peggy Sawyer in 42nd Street a go but would also love to do Mamma Mia and Hairspray!
If you could give one piece of advice to any aspiring musical theatre actors out there, what would it be?
Believe in yourself and your craft. You have to know that you’re good at what you do to convince a casting team that you’re good.
I know you've just landed your next musical theatre job. Could we have a hint as to what the show will be? Or any news on when we'll find out? I can't wait!
Ooooo I shouldn’t! Okay, one clue is that I will be playing even younger than Eva. I’m unsure of when the cast announcement will be but I start rehearsals at the very end of May.
My blog is called Stage to Page. But if you could turn any book, from page to stage, what would it be and why?
My absolute favourite book, call me cliché, is “All That She Can See” by Carrie. I think it would make an amazing musical.
Thank you so much for chatting to us Alicia. I'll be watching out for cast announcements in May! Good luck in the future, and I can't wait to see what you do next.
