The next interview in our stagey chat series is with Tobias Turley and Stevie Doc; winners of ITV's Mamma Mia! I Have a Dream. Following their West End run as Sophie and Sky in Mamma Mia, the unstoppable duo are back for one night only for Here We Go Again, a concert at Cadogan Hall on 10th May.
Get yourself comfy and join us for the next segment of Stagey Chat!
Hi Toby and Stevie, how are you both doing today? Thanks so much for chatting to Stage to Page! Would you mind introducing yourselves to our readers and telling us how you first got into acting?
Tobias: Hello everyone, my name is Tobias Turley. You probably know me from winning the ITV1 talent show ‘Mamma Mia! I Have a Dream’. I have also been in other brilliant shows such as Heathers (JD & Kurt Kelly) West Side Story (Diesel), Doctor Who, BBC Proms and a handful of other things. I got into acting at a young age as my parents would take me along to be apart of the shows they were doing and I just got hooked from there.
Stevie: Hello! I’m doing great thank you and thanks for having us! My name is Stevie Doc and I am a Scottish actress from Glasgow. I think the first time I ever got into acting was when my mum took me along to my older sister’s drama group one day. Acting was always more of her thing growing up which is funny because now she’s living in Australia and has a degree in marketing! The first time I really fell in love with it though was when my friends wanted to do our school musical and I went along because I thought it would be fun to sing and dance with my friends in the ensemble and to my surprise and almost sadness at the FOMO, I wound up being given the lead! I ended up having the most incredible time and it was the first time I really thought “oh, I might be good at this”.
Your concert, Here We Go Again, has just been announced on the 10th May at the iconic Cadogan Hall. How are you feeling about performing your concert in such an incredible venue?
T: I have to admit I’m equals part excited and nervous. This is a massive deal for me as this is the venue I did a lot of choir work with my drama school (GSA). I was backing vocals for a lot of other concerts that take place there so it feels very surreal to be returning with my own show. It’s something I’m definitely not taking for granted.
S: I’m so excited! Cadogan Hall is such a beautiful venue and it feels like the perfect fit for Toby and me to have a wee chat and connect with our fans. I really think it’s going to be such a lovely evening!
You were both winners of the hit ITV series, Mamma Mia! I Have a Dream. How has life been since finishing your ten-month stint as Sophie and Sky in the West End production of Mamma Mia?
T: Life has been an absolute roller coaster since finishing Mamma Mia. I keep myself very busy with lots of concerts, my podcast (The Scene Stealers) and my most recent show ‘White Rose’ has recently come to an end aswell.
S: It feels like you’ve been on a rollercoaster for over a year and when you get off there’s part of you that’s glad to have the rest but part of you misses the thrill of it all! I loved playing Sophie and I miss seeing my cast every day but I’m so grateful for all of the opportunities I’ve had since leaving the show that I wouldn’t have gotten if I were still there, like this concert, so it’s bittersweet. I’m looking forward to seeing where else this crazy journey takes me!
My blog is called Stage to Page. But if you could turn any book, from page to stage, what would it be and why?
T: Ooh brilliant question. Where’s Wally. Joking, I think a Stephen King Novel could do really well on stage. I’m going to say ‘The Shining’ because I adore the movie and I think it would translate beautifully as a play.
S: I hate to admit it, but I don’t read very much. I just find it so difficult and I get too distracted! Saying that though, I do listen to audiobooks (is that cheating?) and I think “Where the Crawdads Sing” could be made into an amazing play! We all love a good murder mystery don’t we?
And finally, why should people book tickets to the concert, Here We Go Again, on 10th May?
T: People should book their tickets because it’s going really going to be a night to remember. Lots of brilliant songs, me and Stevie causing chaos as we usually do and we have some amazing guests aswell. It’s going to be a blast.
S: You’ll get to watch some of mine and Tobias’ most iconic duets and solos and some new things that no one has seen before, not to mention performances with our wonderful guests Esme Bowdler and Jacob Fowler! You also might get some behind the scenes goss from our time on the TV show and from our time in the West End production of Mamma Mia!
