& JULIET | REVIEW

& Juliet

Rating: ★★★★
Venue: New Wimbledon Theatre, London

Get whisked away on a fabulous journey as Juliet ditches her famous ending for a fresh beginning and a second chance at life and love—her way. Created by the Emmy-winning writer from “Schitt’s Creek,” this hilarious new musical flips the script on the greatest love story ever told and asks, what would happen next if Juliet didn’t end it all over Romeo?

Having debuted in 2019 in London's West End, I was gutted when & Juliet finished its run in 2023 after an incredibly successful three and a half year run. However, we now have this fantastic show back, bursting with high energy, full of personality and vibrant colours, on its UK tour with a brand new cast. With jukebox musicals becoming increasingly popular, but being incredibly hit and miss, & Juliet proves that jukebox musicals can absolutely work. The boy band's back, all right!

The plot is based around Shakespeare's classic, Romeo & Juliet, and what would happen if Juliet didn’t take her own life after Romeo's death...and then the chaos unleashes; with lots of fun, adventure and a journey of discovering who Juliet is without Romeo, with the help of her friends and Nurse.

Also another wonderful part about this musical is the topics of empowerment and inclusive
attitudes towards gender and sexuality. And this is predominantly brought to life by the character of May, who is played by Jordan Broatch on the UK tour. May is a non-binary character and the production celebrates this, reflecting in a delicate way on the journey of their self-discovery. It is truly a really lovely and positive representation of this character.

For me, Sandra Marvin who plays Angelique and Ranj Singh who plays Lance stole the whole show, with their wit and chemistry. They bounced off each other perfectly and their performances complimented each other well; you can see a real bond and trust between these two actors on stage.

A shoutout to Liam Morris who covered Romeo the performance I attended. Even though his role is somewhat small, Morris certainly made a big impact. Also I must mention Lara Denning who plays Anne, wowing audiences with her absolute powerhouse vocal ability; especially when she sings the iconic hit, “That’s the Way It Is”.

You certainly will leave this show on such a buzz, especially from the already familiar catchy music from Max Martin. It's so upbeat and feel-good; all I wanted to do was get up on stage and join in! The choreography from Jennifer Weber is just perfect and fits in so well with the music. I absolutely love all the costumes in this production, designed by Paloma Young; not one dull colour in sight! Bright, bold, and the attention to detail on the costumes is simply incredible.

One thing's for certain...there is life after Romeo.
