WEST END MUSICAL HALLOWEEN | REVIEW

West End Musical Halloween

Rating: ★★★★
Venue: Lyric Theatre, London
Cast: Shanay Holmes, Jon Robyns, Courtney Bowman, Nathania Ong, Erin Caldwell and Tobias Turley

This Halloween a surprise cast of the West End’s biggest stars will once again be haunting audiences at the Lyric Theatre with a third instalment of this sell-out concert of freakishly fun show tunes.

Expect songs from the darker side of musicals such as Sweeney Todd, Little Shop Of Horrors, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Phantom Of The Opera, Hadestown and Beetlejuice! Get ready for a host of tricks and treats at this Spooktacular celebration!
As a huge lover of both Halloween and musical theatre, this seemed the perfect evening for me to don my Rocky Horror attire and celebrate all things spooky with other like-minded audience members. The creator of these concerts, West End Musical Brunch, has been entertaining audiences since 2022 - and they're showing no signs of stopping! I'd never been to a concert of theirs before so I was excited as to what trick or treats could be in store.

The staging is simplistic but effective with three towering skeletons and a gentle fog, and paired with low lighting made for the perfect eerie atmosphere. With a crash of thunder and a spark of lightning, our very own Sally (Potterton that is) from The Nightmare Before Christmas appeared with a beautiful rendition of 'Sally's Lament' from The Nightmare Before Christmas, which was swiftly followed by 'When You're an Addams' performed by the entire cast, minus Jon Robyns. Both Jon Robyns and Courtney Bowman were unexpected but a very welcome addition to the line-up last night as Zachary James was unfortunately needed elsewhere last minute.

The evening was incredibly varied with spooky musical theatre numbers like 'Music of the Night', party Halloween staples such as 'Ghostbusters' and pop hits such as 'Superstition' by Stevie Wonder. While I thought the song choices were great and aimed at a larger demographic by appealing to many age groups, I only wish they'd integrated the acts together as the evening didn't feel entirely cohesive. With the first act filled with darker musical theatre ballads, act two was the complete opposite filled with pop hits and fun. If the numbers had been more mixed, I feel as though the evening would have flowed better.

While the show was missing numbers from musicals such as Beetlejuice, Hadestown and Sweeney Todd, it was an evening to remember with showstopping vocals and all of our "leading ghouls", including our "host with the most" were spooktacular. Despite being a last minute addition to the evening, Jon Robyns stole the show for me with his deliciously dark rendition of 'Music of the Night' and his wickedly funny versions of 'Monster Mash' and 'Ghostbusters'.

There were many other standout numbers from the concert such as Courtney Bowman's 'Science Fiction/Double Feature' which I was very much singing at the top of my lungs (you're encouraged to sing and dance along at a West End Musical concert!). Erin Caldwell wow'ed with the 'Wizard and I' and Nathania Ong was spellbinding with 'Last Midnight' from Into the Woods.

An unexpected highlight was Sally Potterton who was our violinist for the evening. She accompanied many of the songs and had solos at the beginning of each act. With The Exorcist being one of my favourite horror films, it was hauntingly beautiful to hear Tubular Bells played solo in a theatre.

While some of the links to Halloween were tenuous to say the least and the two acts felt like entirely different shows, it was difficult not to completely fall in love with the evening as one brief it did hit every time - it was absolutely spooktacular and every single member of the cast was hair-raisingly bewitching (...too much? For my favourite holiday? Never). If you love Halloween, this concert would most definitely be a treat!
