You think you know the story of Mary, Queen of Scots? Think again... The year is 1561. The Scottish Reformation has enforced an outright ban on rock'n'roll. Cue the arrival of Mary Stuart, one of the world's biggest and most iconic musical artists... who happens to be the undisputed Queen of Rock! With the Scottish nobles and her cousin in England against her – can Mary get the country rocking? Or will heads roll?
Mary, Queen of Rock! is a brand new rock 'n' roll gig musical debuting at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this year, and frankly this is guaranteed to be just the start. Set in the iconically recognisable concert style with an almost bare stage bar the 5 piece band, this is the biggest show I’ve ever seen performed in this style. The cast of 7 bring us the true (and sometimes less true) stories of some of the fiercest Mary's in history along with an incredibly inventive, genius fictional storyline woven cleverly through the factual timeline.
In a partly fictional 1500s, Mary Queen of Scots (and rock) returns home from a world tour to find her country facing a ban on rock 'n' roll that even the Queen herself cannot overthrow. It’s a powerful window into a largely overlooked part of Scotland’s past; the girl group of Mary's might be a work of fiction but the narrative highlighting the treatment of women throughout history is strikingly real.
The show very closely emulates the style of Six, a musical that we all know and love which, despite its massive ongoing success on the West End and Broadway, has its roots firmly planted in the Edinburgh Fringe. Six will forever have a cult following and is written into the history books, but they have paved the way for this previously overlooked style of show to be brought into the mainstream lens. This show has managed the impossible feat of injecting the show with everything that makes Six work so well, while remaining entirely fresh and edgy. Not only is this show quickly being dubbed as the ‘new Six’, it’s also the best thing the fringe has seen since Moss & Marlow were in town.
I was really drawn by the style of the costumes which, again were clearly influenced by Six, but also managed to incorporate a rock 'n' roll edge while remaining recognisably and traditionally Scottish.
Mary, Queen of Rock! is the latest in a trend of overlooked historical stories gracing the stage, especially those of women previously ignored or forgotten, and giving them the chance to reclaim their power. Of course this is not going to change the past, we cannot erase the thousands of years of injustice and discrimination women have (and still do) faced, but we can make absolutely sure that we keep saying their names and passing their stories along to those that will carry them, and as our beloved Queen Mary says “When you tell our stories, make sure they’re LOUD!”
The easiest 5* I think I’ve ever given.
